Inversion sprains are the most common cause of pain in ankles. This is where the foot is forcibly rolled inward at the ankle, overstretching the lateral ligament complex of the ankle joint. The role of the lateral ligament complex is to limit inversion of the ankle to provide stability. Overstretching the lateral ligament complex results in pain and swelling.
Therefore we treat inversion sprains with RICE!
Other less common causes of ankle pain are: peroneal tendon injuries, tarsal tunnel syndrome (nerve compression), achilles tendon injuries, fractures, Posterior Tibial Tendon Dysfunction and poor biomechanics.
