Shin Pain

Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome (MTS) or shin splints, is a condition that commonly affects runners. Individuals who develop MTS experience pain and swelling along the lower third of their shins.

MTS in an inflammatory reaction in the deep tissues of the lower leg, which can be caused by over- training, tight calf muscles, excessive hip rotation, over-pronation of feet (flat feet) and poor running technique.

Treatment for MTS includes: improving running technique through biomechanical assessment and gait analysis, avoiding running downhill or on uneven hard surfaces and gentle stretching.
